Dear Panther Parents,

Last week, we were assigned a different person to report in honor of Black History Month. We are supposed to find out information about our specific person. We are to then put that information on an index card and place it in the paper bag. On the front of the bag, we are supposed to draw a picture or print a picture of the person we are studying. The back should contain important information including a timeline. This project is due Friday, February 11th. Be sure to work on it this week! No late projects will be accepted!

Dear Panther Parents,

Did you know that when we recycle, we can earn money for the school? This money can be used to buy books, computers, treats, supplies and much more for our school. So the last Friday of every month, 4H members will be outside in the car loading zone collecting papers including newspapers, ads and magazines. You won’t even have to exit your car to drop it off. 4H members will collect it for you. Help us earn money for fun stuff, recycle!

Friday, January 28th 2011 TOTs will be hosting the Snowball dance! The dance is from 3 to 6 and all grade levels are invited to the dance. Kindergartners and 1st graders must be with an adult. The cost to get into this fun time is only $5.00! There will be many delicious treats like pizza.

SCHOOL SAFETY

Have you ever wondered who is walking the halls without us knowing? Well, one way to avoid being concerned about that is by stopping into the Office and receiving a Visitor’s Pass. This way we know who is in the building at all times. If parents or others come into our building without stopping in the office, we place our children and staff in a position of uneasiness. All visitors should enter the school through the front doors and make their very first stop the Main Office. By doing this the Office Staff will be able to ensure that whomever is in our building is known by the Office Staff along with the location they are to visit.

School safety is something we all must be alert to. We always welcome the participation of our parents and grandparents in our school community, but we all must do our part to ensure that our participation is handled in a way that is appropriate. So, I am asking regardless of our reason for the visit, please stop in the Main Office and get a Visitor Pass so that when someone sees you in the hallway they know that the Office is aware of your presence. If you do not have a pass, the staff will challenge you and ask if you have been to the Main Office. These passes are bright yellow and easily seen as you move through the hallways. If you are a Volunteer, you know to stop in the office to get a Volunteer Badge to wear.

Thank you for helping us keep Louis Sheffield safe for all. We want all children and staff to feel safe at all times. I know you want the same.

The TOTs at our school are having a dance called the Turky Trot Dance. At the dance they will have food and drinks alreday there for you such as pizza, popcorn, soda, also those other stuff you like. The dance is 3:00-6:00 pm Only 2-5 grade are allowed to go to the dance. You have to pay $5.00 to get into the dance. And you have to bring in can goods such as soda cans. The dance is on November 19 on friday. Hope you can come, its going to be a lot of fun.

When you walk into some classrooms you will see teachers using interactive boards that provide them extra support in the classroom. Teachers have a lot of technology around them today to give children a variety of experiences and to enhance their teaching. I invite you to talk with your child’s teacher about innovations in the classroom that are enriching the learning experience. I also invite you to talk to the teacher about ways the learning can continue at home. Working together your child will grow well and learn much.

With technology comes caution. I encourage you to help your child understand the importance of using technology wisely. There are a lot of learning opportunities that come through the use of computers. If you do not have one at home, the library is a great resource where you and your child can access technology while also exploring books.

Reading Campaign

We have launched our Million Word Campaign school-wide. All children in the school should work to reach the goal of a million words for the school year. If the children are non-readers, we ask that you help them by reading to them each night and then logging those titles into their book log.

The goal of the Million Word Campaign each year is to give our students an appreciation for good literature and to help them with their reading fluency as well. For our young readers, we want them to begin to look at pictures and print and putting stories together in a logical manner. As they continue to spend time with books they will also begin to learn the words on the page. If we talk to our children about what we read together or what they read we can get a sense for whether they are comprehending, understanding),the author’s purpose for writing the story. Also remember that there are a variety of items children can access to read. Magazines and newspapers are also tools to introduce your children reading. When children are readers they become lifelong learners and that is our ultimate goal for them. There is so much information they can receive through reading books of all types and all genres. Help your child reach their goal and log those books.

Oh, The Places We’ll Go! as we explore the pages of good literature. Let’s have fun with reading and fun reading with our children.

Reading Celebration

Our annual Reading Celebration is fast approaching. Each year we take time to recognize the efforts of students make to improve their reading. We will have guests here from First Coast High School, a barbecue, activities and a dance for everyone.
This is a REALLY busy day! We want and need as many parents as possible to help ensure that all of our students enjoy themselves and stay safe.
Lunch for parents is just $3.00 and we will have tickets on sale in the office.

Don’t tell anyone but … the end of the school year is coming! Today everyone will receive the 3rd Report Card of the year. This means we only have about 6 more weeks of school.
For our 5th graders, these will be the last weeks of their elementary career. There are lots of activities and recognitions planned for them and we hope they can all participate. Fifth graders do have a special Behavior Contract that covers the end of school. If you haven’t heard about it, ask your student.

Author Visit

On April 16th, students in grades 3 – 5 will be visited by Jane R. Wood, a local author. She has written four chapter books and each one takes place in Jacksonville or surrounding cities. Mrs. Wood will speak with the students about all areas of author’s craft, such as finding a topic, using descriptive words, editing and revising. The students have an opportunity to pre-order her chapter books (this month) for $7.00 each.
Only cash will be accepted. Your child should have brought home a letter and order form on green paper last week. A short summary of each book is included in the letter. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Ayers at ayersd@duvalschools.org or at 696-8758.

Remember that FCAT is fast approaching. Our students have been taught what they need to know to do well on the test – our curriculum. Now we have to make sure that they SHOW what they know. Let’s make sure everyone gets to school ready to do their very best on the FCAT!

UNF Sports and Fitness Camp

UNF will be offering a sports and fitness camp this summer. The camp runs from June 14 through August 6. The fee for the general public is $165.00 per week with a discount for active military. There is an additional supply fee of $10.00 per week.
Registration begins March 8th at the UNF Arena. Early registration is March 1 – 5 at the Arena.

FCAT Reading Changes

The FCAT is coming – as if you didn’t know!
But, did you know how much reading you have to do on the FCAT? The average reading selection in the reading FCAT is now 500 words long! That is about 5 pages of reading in a book – and THEN you have to answer questions!
STAMINA is a big part of the test and something you CAN work on. Practice reading every night until you can easily read 5 pages without a break. I read a lot, for many reasons. I must admit that when I first heard this news, I thought it would be easy. The first time I tried, I stopped after two pages – my eyes were tired! By reading every night, my eyes got stronger and I could easily surpass the 5 page target. Now I’m working on being able to read longer chunks.
Of course on the test, you will have to read several selections of 5 pages or more. How do you manage that? By practicing! Try timing yourself. Read 5 pages, take a break for a minute and then do another 5 pages. By practicing, you will be able to read for longer periods of time.
Want a real challenge? Have your mom or dad or even a friend ask you some of those “thinking” questions about what you’ve read!!

In this story, Frankie waits every year hoping for a certain gift when the Christmas Train rolls through his Appalachian town. As an adult, he realizes that it is now his turn to give back and the cycle continues.
This is a great story for the holidays and a wonderful message of kindness and giving for our children!

The 4-H Club is hosting its 3rd annual Lock In this year! Check in is Friday December 4th at 7:00pm and check out at 8:00 am Saturday December 5th.
Students MUST arrive in their PJ's with sleeping gear. Dancing, Games, Movies, Pizza, snacks, and donuts are all provided in our secure building! The cost is $15 for the WHOLE NIGHT OF FUN! Spaces are limited, so make your reservation today!

Parents, we have a LOT of coats and jackets in our Lost and Found! We will spread the items out in the front hall on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons during dismissal. Please encourage your children to pick up their “stuff”. Anything left will be sent to the Salvation Army during the holidays.
Several people have asked about holiday celebrations in the classrooms. We have scheduled all celebrations for December 15 to ensure that the custodians have time to clean the rooms before vacation.

With the onset of the Parent Portal, we will NO LONGER provide a Progress Report to ALL students. Parents can log on to the Parent Portal site at https://dcps.mygradeportal.com at any time to see their child’s current grades. Remember to use https- this is a secure site.
We will be sending home a Progress Report for students in danger of receiving a D or F. This report should be signed and returned to the teacher to confirm that you are aware of your child’s situation.

We will be conducting VISION SCREENING this month. Students need to see well if they are going to do well in school. This month we will screen our students to see who is having trouble seeing the board and ask their parents to have their doctor’s check them out.

Toys for TOTS

It may seem early, but the holiday season is underway! This year Sheffield is going to be a collection site for the Marine's Toys 4 Tots program. In the past, they have helped us provide toys for families in our own school, so we would like to give back this year with so many families in need. Please donate a new, unwrapped toy for a girl or a boy of any age.
We will be collecting toys from November 2nd - December 15th in the bin located by the main entrance and are looking forward to helping many families have a good holiday this year!

Book of the Month

This month’s character trait is Patriotism. The Superintendent has chosen the book: Barack Obama: Son of Promise, Child of Hope as our book of the month. In this book, a mother is telling her child the story of our President’s childhood and struggle to overcome many adversities in his life.
The focus is on the ways we can show patriotism in our daily lives by showing respect to the flag and other symbols of America, learning about our country’s history and participating in their community.

Cracker Barrel Pie Sale

The competition between classrooms is going strong. Many parents have already gotten quite a few pie orders. Checks can be made out to Sheffield Elementary School. The pies are $10.00 each and there's a huge selection to choose from. The proceeds from this sale will be used to purchase an ice machine for the school. The ice machine will come in handy when classes go on field trips and have parties.
All money and orders are due by Tuesday, November 17th. That's one week from today!

If you have not received your password and ID yet, you can come to school and receive it by presenting a picture ID and giving us your e-mail address.. Only parents or guardians who are listed in our active computer files can receive a password. We have found some people who thought they were listed but were not.

Parents, we have been asked to participate in a research project! A student at UNF is conducting research into and child attitudes. She needs 250 people to respond so she can validate her work.
We will be sending home surveys to students in one class of each grade level later this week. The survey will take about 20-30 minutes to complete. We need them back within a week from when you receive them.
If you get a survey, please complete it thoughtfully. This is some important work that can help children! Thank you

Cracker Barrel Pie Sale

You should be receiving a manila envelope today with the pie fundraiser information in it. Please make sure that your child’s name and teacher is on the front of the envelope. There are 6 pies to choose from and they are priced at $10.00 per pie.
The class on each grade level that sells the most pies will have an ice cream party, compliments of Cracker Barrel. The winning class overall will win a huge gift basket for their teacher.
Orders are due on Nov. 17 and the fresh baked pies will be delivered on Nov. 24th at 7:00 a.m. on November 24th. This will enable parents to pick up pies and deliver them to the workplace.

Progress Monitoring Plans

During the next few weeks, teachers will be making appointments with parents to discuss ideas to make the year more successful. This involves creating a PMP (progress monitoring plan). The plan basically describes the student’s current level of achievement and how far they need to go to meet the requirements for promotion. Teachers and parents make a plan for what each will do and when they will meet again to check on progress.

A very big “THANK YOU” to everyone who helped to make our Fall Festival a success! Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun. We appreciate the efforts of all of our volunteers in setting up, running and tearing down the booths.
Our next big event will be Vision Screening in November. We hope to have lots of volunteers so we can check our students to see who needs glasses before the year gets too far along.

Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week is a week of learning about healthy life choices and having fun. The first choices are to “Say No” when offered, illegal drugs. Now we also know that we need to say yes to good food, exercise and good friends.

We are finishing up testing here at Sheffield. As you may know, the DOE mandated a new Reading test be administered to all students this year in grades K-12. Unfortunately, technology was not up to the dream and we have had to administer the test as the bandwidth could handle it.
As the results from this and other tests arrive, we will be asking some parents to come to PMP meetings to talk about their child’s progress and plans for making this year a success. These are important strategy meetings which will allow you and your child’s teacher to work together to ensure that your child will have a successful year.
Please plan on attending if you get the invitation.

We have started a new catalog fundraiser! Every child who will commit to selling 5 items will automatically receive a prize and every child that actually sells 10 or more items will be able to attend a Mega Party once the fundraiser is over. Please see the paperwork sent home with your child.

Book of the Month: Stone Soup

This month’s Superintendent’s book of the Month is an Asian version of Stone Soup. In this story, three monks are traveling through the country and come upon a village where everyone is suspicious of strangers and change. Their village is poor and everyone looks out for themselves.
Can the monks show them the way to become happier through cooperation? Ask your child what’s happening in the story and how it can apply to all of us.

We now anticipate that the ParentPortal will be ready on November 3 which is the anticipated date for Report Cards – also a change. Rather than change our schedule, we will have our workshop on the 20th and start giving out passwords – just know they won’t work until November.
Some of you have also expressed concern about the Attendance system calling you when we both know you child is out sick. Unfortunately, the system can only read present or absent in the reports and it calls EVERYONE who is marked absent 

Traffic Warning!

We have been told that Traffic Enforcement Officers will be visiting Sheffield. As many of you have said, we have problems with parking and traffic in the afternoon. Several officers have been out issuing “courtesy” tickets and trying to inform people about the laws but that hasn’t been really successful. The officers coming out will be issuing “real” citations for $100 and more. A word to the wise!

The New Gradebook

The new OnCourse system will allow parents to see how their child is doing by simply logging on to their teacher’s website and looking at their grades.
To protect your child’s security, you will be required to have a user ID for the system and a password. These will be provided by the school. There are a few caveats you need to be aware of:
1) Passwords can only be given out IN PERSON – PICTURE ID will be required
2) Passwords are only generated from the school’s database – if you are not listed in the database, we cannot give you a password
3) You must have an email address so that forgotten passwords can be sent to you
We will have a meeting on October 20 at 6:00 in the cafeteria to explain the process. We should be able to start passing out passwords on October 20 after school. We will be set up to continue all week.

Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week is a week of learning about healthy life choices and having fun. The first choices are to “Say No” when offered, illegal drugs. Now we also know that we need to say yes to good food, exercise and good friends.
Join us in having fun, too by participating in the daily activities while you learn in class. Here’s the schedule:
Oct. 19 – Wear Red
Oct. 20 – Pirate Day ( no weapons)
Oct. 21 Crazy Hair Day
Oct 22 – TV Character Day (no masks)

Panthers are collecting dog and cat food which will be donated to the Humane Society. A representative from the Humane Society will pick up the pet food in October.
Last year Sheffield students donated over twelve cartons of dog and cat food. Let's try to break that record and go for twenty cartons of food. Look for a box in the front hallway for all donated pet food. It will be decorated with animal cut-outs.

Fall Festival

Our Fall Festival will be on October 23rd from 6:00- 9:00 PM here at school. As usual, the key to a great event is our VOLUNTEER FORCE. Volunteers are needed to set up, run the booths and break down afterwards. Please call Kim DiGiorgi at 887-6194 to volunteer.
We are also accepting wrapped candy for the festival (no peanuts). There is a BIG box on the stage for donations!
Thanks to all of our volunteers who made the Back to School Dance a success on Friday evening! Over 200 Panthers had a great time

Teachers of Tomorrow

Our Teachers of Tomorrow (TOTs) are sponsoring their first service project of the year. We would like to ask all of our students, parents and community friends to donate school supplies for students who cannot afford them. Items like composition notebooks, lined writing paper, pencils, pens, etc. are needed. There will be a collection bin in room 25 until September 20th.
Supplies will be distributed to teachers to give to students in need. The donated supplies will stay at Sheffield.

Back to School Dance

The PTA is sponsoring the first dance of the year on Friday, September 18. We want to make sure that everyone has a good time at the dance, so we have a few rules EVERYONE needs to know;
• Once you enter the dance, you may only leave with an adult
• Students will use the “little” restrooms in the front hall
• Students are expected to dance, running, chasing, etc will result in time out. If you have to be removed from the dance, your parents will be called.
• When you are finished with your drinks and food, throw your trash away.
• The dance ends promptly at 8:00 and all students must be picked up at that time.

The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will hold their annual Round-Up at Sheffield on Thursday, the 3rd at 7:00 PM. Both of these fine organizations teach very important values, a love of nature and life skills. Parents MUST accompany students to the round-ups to sign paperwork and pay the initial fees.
Please plan to attend Open House on September 10th. We will have someone selling dinner starting at about 5:45 (½ barbecue chicken, for $10). Come learn more about helping your child to have a great year!

Welcome Back Dance

Our Welcome Back Dance has been rescheduled for September 18th. Tickets will be on sale that week.
We still have school supply kits for each grade level available for purchase. Even if you have purchased supplies for your child, you can always purchase a kit and donate it to your child's classroom.
We will be selling memberships, magnets and t-shirts at Open House on September 10th. Please help your child's class reach 100% membership!!!! The sports cup fundraiser begins August 31st and end on September 11th.

The first day of school went very well. The first Pawprint was sent home with your child yesterday. Please take a moment to read it for the latest news. It will also be posted to the school website later today. Your child was also sent home with some paperwork for you to fill out. Please return that paperwork as soon as possible. Be sure to include working phone numbers should the school need to contact you in case of an emergency. The first PTA fundraiser will begin on August 31st. They will be selling sets of sports team cups. Be on the look-out for that information to be coming home soon. Please check back frequently for updates. Thank you for your continued support!

School Supplies

PTA will be selling pre-packaged school supply kits for the coming school year. The package includes ALL of the requested supplies for each grade level. This will be a convenient way to the new school year. We will be selling them on the day of orientation (August 20). IF there are any left over, we will be selling them the first day of school. Please come and support your PTA.
